Abstract
Background and Objectives: Academic posters are an important medium for communicating research at academic meetings and scientific conferences; however, mastering the rules for an effective poster may be absent from the graduate chemistry curriculum. The aim of the present study was to assess, among a sample of Chemistry Master's (SCM) students (N = 36), students' knowledge of scientific poster design, organization and presentation for academic conferences, using a five-item, researcher-developed, multiple-choice questionnaire whose content was reviewed by subject-matter experts.
Methods: This study was descriptive and cross sectional with a purposive sample of 36 Chemistry Master's students. A five-item multiple-choice researcher developed questionnaire used to collect data on the purpose of academic poster, hierarchy of information, logical order of sections, use of concise text, and use of figures and tables. Descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) were computed for each item.
Results: The results revealed that there was a good awareness level among participants. The students were able to recognize the main aim of academic poster (91.7%), the need to organize information in a logical visual hierarchy (94.4%), the correct sequence of poster sections (83.3%), the need for concise text (86.1%) and the use of figures and tables (91.7%).
Conclusions: The students of the Chemistry Masters showed that they have satisfactory background knowledge about the academic poster design and the principles of scientific communication. These results indicate that a graduate level research training program is effective in passing on the fundamental skills of poster preparation, but that further incorporation of practical poster preparation into the graduate curriculum is desirable in order to reinforce and expand these skills.
